Lionel Richie: "Say You, Say Me" (1985)

"Say You, Say Me" is a Oscar winning song, written and recorded by Lionel Richie for the film White Nights, starring Mikhail Baryshnikov and Gregory Hines. The single hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B singles charts. in December 1985. It became Richie's ninth number one on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart. The track is not available on the soundtrack album to the film, because Motown did not want Richie's first single since the Can't Slow Down album to appear on another record label. It finally appeared on the Dancing on the Ceiling album released in 1986.

The track won the Academy Award for Best Original Song in 1985.

In 2008, the song was ranked at #74 of the top songs of all time on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, commemorating the first 50 years of the chart.

- Lyrics:

Say you, say me
Say it for always
That's the way it should be

Say you, say me
Say it together
Naturally

I had a dream,
I had an awesome dream
People in the park
Playing games in the dark
And what they played,
Was a masquerade,
From behind the walls of doubt
A voice was crying out

Say you, say me
Say it for always
That's the way it should be

Say you, say me
Say it together
Naturally

As we go down life’s lonesome highway,
Seems the hardest thing to do
is to find a friend or two
Is to find the
That helping hand,
Someone who understands
when you feel you lost your way
You've got someone there to say:
I'll show you

Say you, say me
Say it for always
That's the way it should be

Say you, say me
Say it together
Naturally

So you think you know the answers,
Oh, no
Well, the whole world’s got you dancing, that’s right, I’m telling you.
It’s time to start believe,
oh yes,
Believe in who you are, you are a shining star.

Say you, say me
Say it for always
That's the way it should be

Say you, say me
Say it together
Naturally

Say it together
Naturally

Icehouse: "Great Southern Land" (1982)

"Great Southern Land" is a single released by Australian rock band Icehouse. It was released in August 1982, before the album Primitive Man. Peaking at number five on the Australian Singles Chart, it was later featured in the 1988 Yahoo Serious film Young Einstein, and remains their most popular song according to listeners of Triple M in 2007.

It was re-released in the U.S. on Chrysalis Records in 1989 as both a 7" and CD single, to coincide with the U.S. release of the compilation album, Great Southern Land.

- Lyrics:

Standing at the limit of an endless ocean
stranded like a runaway, lost at sea
city on a rainy day down in the harbour
watching as the grey clouds shadow the bay
looking everywhere 'cause I had to find you
this is not the way that i remember it here
anyone will tell you its a prisoner island
hidden in the summer for a million years

Great Southern Land, burned you black

So you look into the land and it will tell you a story
story 'bout a journey ended long ago
listen to the motion of the wind in the mountains
maybe you can hear them talking like I do
" they're gonna betray you, they're gonna forget you
are you gonna let them take you over that way "

Great Southern Land, Great Southern Land
you walk alone, like a primitive man
and they make it work, with sticks and bones
see their hungry eyes, its a hungry home

I hear the sound of the stranger's voices
I see their hungry eyes, their hungry eyes
Great Southern Land, Great Southern Land
they burned you black, black against the ground

Standing at the limit of an endless ocean
stranded like a runaway, lost at sea
city on a rainy day down in the harbour
watching as the grey clouds shadow the bay
looking everywhere 'cause I had to find you
this is not the way that i remember it here
anyone will tell you its a prisoner island
hidden in the summer for a million years

Great Southern Land, in the sleeping sun
you walk alone with the ghost of time
they burned you black, black against the ground
and they make it work with rocks and sand

I hear the sound of the stanger's voices
I see their hungry eyes, their hungry eyes
Great Southern Land, Great Southern Land
you walk alone, like a primitive man
you walk alone with the ghost of time
and they burned you black
yeah, they burned you black
Great Southern Land

The Pointer Sisters: "Fire" (1979)

"Fire" is a song written by Bruce Springsteen, written around 1977. Though written and first recorded during the troubled sessions that followed Born to Run, Springsteen's version of the song remained unreleased until his 1986 live compilation Live/1975-85.

The Live/1975-85 version of the song was released as a single in January 1987, reaching #46 on the pop charts. Springsteen's studio recording of the song remained unreleased until 2010's The Promise. In addition, "Fire" has been covered by a number of notable artists, including Robert Gordon, The Pointer Sisters, Shakin' Stevens and Cher.

- Lyrics:

I'm ridin' in your car,
You turn on the radio.
You're pullin' me close,
I just say no.
I say, "I don't like it."
But you know I'm a liar.
'Cause when we kiss,
Ooo-ooo, fire!

Late at night,
You're takin' me home.
You say you wanna stay.
I say, "I wanna be alone."
I say, "I don't love you."
But you know I'm a liar.
'Cause when we kiss,
Ooo-ooo, fire!

You had a hold on me,
Right from the start.
A grip so tight,
I couldn't tear it apart.
My nerves are jumpin',
Actin' like a fool.
Well, your kisses they burn,
But my heart stays cool.

Well, Romeo and Juliet,
Samson and Delilah,
Baby, you can bet,
A love they couldn't deny.
My words say, "Split,"
But my words they lie.
'Cause when we kiss,
Ooo-ooo, fire.

[Instrumental break.]

(Oooo-ooo.)
(Fire.)

Hot kisses like,
(Fire. )
Burn me up with,
(Fire.)
I like what you're doing now,
(Fire.)
Touching me with,
(Fire.)
Touching me, burning me with,
[Fade.]
(Fire.)
Take me home.
(Fire.)
Hot kisses like,
(Fire.)

Barry White: "Practice What You Preach" (1994)

"Practice What You Preach" is the title of a number-one R&B single by singer Barry White from his 1994 album The Icon Is Love. The hit song spent three weeks at number-one on the US R&B chart and reached eighteen on the pop chart. The 1994 single also won a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul Song of the Year.

- Lyrics:

So what do you want to do, I'm here, baby
I'm ready baby, I'm waiting on you
Believe me, I am patiently waiting on you

Girls, there's something wrong with me
Every time I'm alone with you
You keep talking about you loving me
Hey babe, your foreplay just blows my mind
So why don't we stop all the talking girl
Why don't we stop wasting time?

'Cause you keep telling me this and telling me that
You say once I'm with you, I'll never go back
You say there's a lesson that you want to teach
Well here I am baby, practice what you preach

Girl it's just you and me, so many things
I could do to you and so many ways I can please

Hey, hey, hey it's your move girl
Why don't you start turning down the lights
And show me what you can do?

'Cause you keep telling me this and telling me that
You say once I'm with you, I'll never go back
You say there's a lesson that you want to teach
Well here I am baby, practice what you preach

Ladies, baby, baby, baby
We're wasting time, precious time
All this talk about what you're gonna do
And how you're gonna do it to me
Come on, practice what you preach

'Cause you keep telling me this and telling me that
You say once I'm with you, I'll never go back
You say there's a lesson that you want to teach
Well here I am baby, practice what you preach

Give me a reason to love you,
Give me a reason to be a women,
I just want to be a woman
From this time unchained,
Were all looking at a different picture,
Through this new frame of mind,
A thousand flowers could bloom,
Move over and give us some room
CHORUS
So don't you stop being a man,
Just take a little look from outside when you can,
Sow a little a tenderness,
No matter if you cry
CHORUS
{Its all I want to be, a woman,
So I just want to be a woman,
For this is the beginning of forever and ever,
Its time to move over now,

Well you could have been anything that you want to
And I can tell
The way you do the things you do

You make my life so rich
You know you should have been some money

- Lyrics:

Adia I do believe I failed you
Adia I know I let you down
Don’t you know I tried so hard
To love you in my way
It’s easy let it go...
Adia I’m empty since you left me
Trying to find a way to carry on
I search myself and everyone
To see where we went wrong
’cause there’s no one left to finger
There’s no one here to blame
There’s no one left to talk to, honey
And there ain’t no one to buy our innocence
’cause we are born innocent
Believe me adia, we are still innocent
It’s easy, we all falter
Does it matter?
Adia I thought that we could make it
But I know I can’t change the way you feel
I leave you with your misery
A friend who won’t betray
I pull you from your tower
I take away your pain
And show you all the beauty you possess
If you’d only let yourself believe that
We are born innocent
Believe me adia, we are still innocent
It’s easy, we all falter, does it matter?
Believe me adia, we are still innocent
’cause we are born innocent
Adia we are still innocent
It’s easy, we all falter ... but does it matter?

All along I had to talk
About it
Like a two edged sword,
He touched you and it stabs (me)

Chorus:
All along I knew you were
A phony girl
You sit behind the mask
And you control your world

Yesterday he held you in his arms
But when I’m holdin’ you
Feel it’s bitter charms
I can’t judge what you’re doin’ to me
You camouflage the truth,
Indulge your fantasy

(chorus)

(chorus)

Who do you love?
Is it me?
Is it him?
I don’t know!

There is nothing in your eyes
(there is nothing in your eyes)
But that’s the way you cry
(but that’s the way you cry, girl)
All is grand, all is bright
(all is grand, all is bright)
You’re just srudyng my mind
(you’re just srudyng my mind)

Was I invited to your masquerade?
Well, the party’s over so
Now take off the face
You say you love, but it’s hard to see
’cause when you’re in his arms
You’re throwing rocks at me

(chorus)

(chorus)

There is nothing in your eyes
(there is nothing in your eyes)
But that’s the way you cry
(but that’s the way you cry, girl)
All is grand, all is bright
(all is grand, all is bright)
You’re just srudyng my mind
Eh, eh, eh

I walk around I’m sufferein’
In my doom
When I come to you,
You’re sittin’ in our room
The truth in you I have
Long to trace
So take off the mask so
I can see your face

(chorus)

(chorus)

(chorus)

(chorus)

What talk about?
What talk about?
Yeah, yeah, yeah

- Lyrics:

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take
But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

La, la, la, la (21x)
La, la, la, la (21x)

See I'm a young soul in this very strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout what is true and fake
But why all this hate? try to communicate
Finding trust and love is not always easy to make

La, la, la, la (21x)
La, la, la, la (21x)

This is a happy end
Cause you don't understand
Everything you have done
Why's everything so wrong

This is a happy end
Come and give me your hand
I'll take you far away

I'm a new soul
I came to this strange world
Hoping I could learn a bit 'bout how to give and take
But since I came here, felt the joy and the fear
Finding myself making every possible mistake

New soul... (la, la, la, la,...)
In this very strange world...
Every possible mistake
Possible mistake
Every possible mistake
Mistakes, mistakes, mistakes...

Now how shall we sing the lord's song in a strange land
When the wicked
Carried us away in captivity
Requiering of us a song
Now how shall we sing the lord's song in a strange land
Let the words of our mouth and the meditations of our heart
be acceptable in thy sight here tonight
Let the words of our mouth and the meditation of our hearts
be acceptable in thy sight here tonight
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.
By the rivers of Babylon, there we sat down
ye-eah we wept, when we remembered Zion.
By the rivers of Babylon (dark tears of Babylon)
there we sat down (You got to sing a song)
ye-eah we wept, (Sing a song of love)

Chapel Club: "Surfacing " (2010)

Chapel Club are an English indie/alternative rock band from London. The band is currently signed to Loog/Universal (worldwide).

Founder member and guitarist Michael Hibbert formed the first iteration of Chapel Club in late 2007. Hibbert had moved to London following the split of his former band and began writing new songs without a definite idea of when or if they would be heard. During this time, Hibbert met bassist Liam Arklie, aged 17 and arrived recently in London from Swindon with the intention of starting a band. The two became friends and Hibbert decided to enlist Arklie as a member of his planned group.

Shortly afterwards, the pair were introduced to Lewis Bowman by a mutual friend. They had been told that Bowman could sing and asked if he wanted to try writing lyrics for the band. Bowman was given several instrumental demos and asked to come up with vocal melodies and lyrics. When he recorded the fruits of his efforts at Hibbert's flat a week later, the latter was impressed enough that he immediately asked Bowman to join the band.

The band's line-up was completed by the summer of 2008, by which time guitarist Alex Parry, Arklie's childhood best friend, and drummer Rich Mitchell had joined the group. (Source: Wikipedia)

- Lyrics:

Strange the god of your name is (?) in two
Shells and silvery scales and torrents of blue
One more pilot fish come to swim with the shark
Dreams of bloodiest extremes picks me from their mouth.

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Bodies swinging in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me.

Cold your blood is your soul but blood is the lie
Soul, the hand that you hold before you arrive
You're perfect, you're worth it your friends said
I guess that it's true
You mean it
I've seen it
The poets got nothing on you

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Bodies swinging in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me.

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Bodies swinging in the sycamore tree
Dream a little dream of me.

Dream a little dream
Dream a little dream
Dream a little dream of me.

Dream a little dream
Dream a little dream
Dream a little dream of me.

Boston: "More Than a Feeling" (1976)

"More Than a Feeling" is a song by the rock band Boston, released as the lead single from their self-titled debut album on Epic Records in September 1976, with "Smokin'" on the flipside.

The single peaked at number five on the Billboard Hot 100. The track has become a staple of classic rock and in 2009 it was named the 39th best hard rock song of all time by VH1.

- Lyrics:

I looked out this morning,
and the sun was gone
Turned on some music to start my day
Then lost myself in a familiar song
I closed my eyes, and I slipped away

CHORUS

It's more than a feeling
When I hear that old song the used to play
And I begin dreamin'
Till I see Marianne walk away
I see my Marianne walkin' away

So many people have come and gone
Their faces fade as the years go by
Yet I still recall as I wander on
As clear as the sun in the summer sky

CHORUS

When I'm tired and thinkin' cold
I hide in my music, forget the day
And dream of a girl I used to know
I closed my eyes and she slipped away
She slipped away

CHORUS

Lionel Richie: "Three Times A Lady" (Live In Amsterdam - 2003)

"Three Times a Lady" is a 1978 single from the funk/soul band the Commodores, from their 1978 album Natural High. It was produced by James Anthony Carmichael and the Commodores and it was the most popular track of the album.

according to wikipedia, in an appearance on The Early Show on June 12, 2009, Richie said he was inspired to write it by a comment his father made about his mother. Reportedly his father said to his mother "I love you. I want you. I need you. Forever" hence the three times[1] It became the Commodores's first Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit, topping the chart for two weeks on August 12, 1978.

It was also the only Motown song to reach the Top 10 that year. The song also spent three weeks at #1 on the adult contemporary chart. It was one of only a few Motown singles to reach the top spot in the UK. In the years since the Commodores had started in 1974 it has been one of their most emotional songs since "You Don't Know That I Know" from the album Caught in the Act in 1975.

The original Commodores' version of the song was included as the final track on Lionel Richie's greatest hits compilation album Back To Front, released in 1992.

- Lyrics:

Thanks for the time that you've given me
The memories are all in my mind
And now that we've come to the end of our rainbow
There's something I must say out loud

You're once, twice, three times a lady
And I love you
Yes, you're once, twice, three times a lady
And I love you
I love you

You've shaded my dreams, my joys, my pains
You've made my life worth living for
And if I had to live my life over again
I'd spend each and every moment with you

You're once, twice, three times a lady
And I love you
Yes, you're once, twice, three times a lady
And I love you
I love you

When we are together, the moments I cherish
With every beat of my heart
To touch you, to hold you, to feel you, to need you
There's nothing to keep us apart

You're once, twice, three times a lady
And I love you
You're once, twice, three times a lady
And I love you

Yes, you're once, twice, three times a lady
I love you

I love you

The Carpenters: "Sometimes" (1973)

Carpenters is the third studio album by The Carpenters. Released on May 14, 1971, the album was successful, reaching #2 on the Billboard 200 chart and #12 in the United Kingdom.

With the hit songs "For All We Know", "Rainy Days and Mondays", and "Superstar", Carpenters solidified Karen Carpenter as one of her generation's most endearing pop vocalists. It has been said that the strength of these recordings is what caused Richard Carpenter to ask his sister to front the band for their live performances instead of playing behind the drums.

Amongst many fans, the album has simply been referred to as The Tan Album, because the original LP cover, complete with overlapping flap, looked like an oversized tan envelope, and is presumably a play on The Beatles' so-called White Album. In Cash Box's Top 100 Albums of 1971, Carpenters peaked at #8. This is the first album to feature the familiar Carpenters logo.

All lead vocals are by Karen, except on the tracks, "Druscilla Penny" and "Saturday", and the "Walk on By" segment of the Bacharach/David Medley, where Richard Carpenter sings lead vocal, with Karen in the background.

- Lyrics:

Sometimes not often enough

We reflect upon the good things

And those thoughts always center around those we love

And I think about those people who mean so much to me

And for so many years have made me so very happy

And I count the times I have forgotten to say "thank you"

And just how much I love them

Otis Reddin: "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" (1967)

"(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" is a song co-written by soul singer Otis Redding and guitarist Steve Cropper.

It was first recorded by Otis Redding in 1967, shortly before his death.

It was released posthumously on Stax Records' Volt label in 1968, becoming the first posthumous number-one single in U.S. chart history.

- Lyrics:

(SITTIN' ON) THE DOCK OF THE BAY
- written by Otis Redding and Steve Cropper
- lyrics as recorded by Otis Redding December 7, 1967, just three
days before his death in a plane crash outside Madison, Wisconsin
- #1 for 4 weeks in 1968

Sittin' in the mornin' sun
I'll be sittin' when the evenin' come
Watching the ships roll in
And then I watch 'em roll away again, yeah

I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm just sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

I left my home in Georgia
Headed for the 'Frisco bay
'Cause I've had nothing to live for
And look like nothin's gonna come my way

So I'm just gonna sit on the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Ooo, I'm sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

Look like nothing's gonna change
Everything still remains the same
I can't do what ten people tell me to do
So I guess I'll remain the same, yes

Sittin' here resting my bones
And this loneliness won't leave me alone
It's two thousand miles I roamed
Just to make this dock my home

Now, I'm just gonna sit at the dock of the bay
Watching the tide roll away
Oooo-wee, sittin' on the dock of the bay
Wastin' time

(whistle)

Lynyrd Skynyrd: "Free Bird" (1973)

"Free Bird" (also spelled "Freebird") is a song by the American southern rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd. It was first featured on the band's debut album (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd) in 1973, and has been included on subsequent albums released by the band, including the previously-unreleased, unfaded-ending version of the original recording (featured on Skynyrd's Innyrds) which ends rather climactically.

Released as a single in November 1974, "Free Bird" became the band's second Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in early 1975, where it peaked at No. 19. A live version of the song also reached the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1977, peaking at No. 38. Free Bird also achieved the No. 3 spot on Guitar World's 100 Greatest Guitar Solos.

It was used as a finale by Lynyrd Skynyrd during their live performances, and was their longest song, often going well over 14 minutes when played live.

- Lyrics:

I was a-cutting the rug down at a place called The Jug
With a girl named Linda Lou
When in walked a man with a gun in his hand
And he was looking for you know who
He said, 'Hey there, fellow with the hair colored yellow
What you tryin' to prove
'Cause that's a-my woman there and I'm a man who cares
And this might be all for you'
I said, "Excuse me"

I was scared and fearing for my life
I was shaking like a leaf on a tree
'Cause he was lean and mean and big and bad, Lord
Pointin' that gun at me
I said, 'Wait a minute, mister, I didn't even kiss her
Don't want no trouble with you
And I know you don't owe me but I wish you would let me
Ask one favor from you'

(Chorus)
Say, won't you
Gimme three steps, gimme three steps, mister
Gimme three steps toward the door
Gimme three steps, gimme three steps, mister
And you'll never see me no more

Well the crowd cleared away and I began to pray
And the water fell on the floor
And I'm telling you, son, well it ain't no fun
Staring straight down a forty-four
Well, he turned and screamed at Linda Lou
And that's the break I was looking for
And you could hear me screaming a mile away
As I was headed out toward the door

Al Stewart: "The Year of The Cat" (1976)

"Year of the Cat" is a song by Scottish singer-songwriter Al Stewart. It is the title track of his album Year of the Cat, which was recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London in January 1976 by engineer Alan Parsons and released in July 1976. It was Stewart's first Top 10 US single, peaking at #8 on the US singles chart. It remains one of Stewart's most popular songs and receives regular airplay on both classic rock and folk rock stations. It is noted for its lengthy instrumental sections, including a long solo that encompasses cello, piano, acoustic guitar, distorted electric guitar, and saxophone. The transition from acoustic guitar to electric to saxophone was initiated by Tim Renwick. Parsons had Phil Kenzie add the saxophone part of the song — and by doing so transformed the original folk concept into the jazz-influenced ballad that put Al Stewart onto the charts.

According to wikipedia, shorter versions of the track can be found on some European 7" single formats. Though both of the discs carry the same label and catalogue number (RCA PB 5007), the French single features the A side track clocking at 4'30", the Italian one features an even shorter mix of just 3'30" so that the lengthy instrumental intro is completely missing.

The song was co-written by Peter Wood. The lyrics tell a story about a tourist who meets a hippie girl in an exotic Moroccan market, stays the night with her, and thus misses his tour bus.

- Lyrics:

On a morning from a Bogart movie
In a country where they turn back time
You go strolling through the crowd like Peter Lorre
Contemplating a crime
She comes out of the sun in a silk dress running
Like a watercolour in the rain
Don't bother asking for explanations
She'll just tell you that she came
In the year of the cat

She doesn't give you time for questions
As she locks up your arm in hers
And you follow 'till your sense of which direction
Completely disappears
By the blue tiled walls near the market stalls
There's a hidden door she leads you to
These days, she says, I feel my life
Just like a river running through
The year of the cat

Well, she looks at you so cooly
And her eyes shine like the moon in the sea
She comes in incense and patchouli
So you take her, to find what's waiting inside
The year of the cat

Well, morning comes and you're still with her
And the bus and the tourists are gone
And you've thrown away the choice and lost your ticket
So you have to stay on
But the drum-beat strains of the night remain
In the rhythm of the new-born day
You know sometimes you're bound to leave her
But for now you're going to stay
In the year of the cat
