Free: "All Right Now" (1970)

"All Right Now" is a rock single by the English rock band "Free". The song, released in mid-1970, hit #2 on the UK singles chart and #4 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. "All Right Now" originally appeared on the album Fire And Water, which Free recorded on the Island Records label, formed by Chris Blackwell. In 1991, the song was remixed and re-released, reaching #8 on the UK singles chart.

"All Right Now" was a #1 hit in over 20 territories and was recognised by ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) in 1990 for garnering 1,000,000 plus radio plays in the U.S. by late 1989. In 2006 the BMI London awards included a Million Air award for 3 million air plays of All Right Now in the USA. The song has recently found a home as part of the encore set for Queen + Paul Rodgers. Before "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions", it offers the fans one more chance to sing along. One of the engineers during the recordings of "All Right Now" was Roy Thomas Baker, who would later become Queen's producer (he mixed "Killer Queen", "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Don't Stop Me Now" among others).

According to drummer Simon Kirke, "All Right Now" was written by bassist Andy Fraser and singer Paul Rodgers in the Durham Students' Union building, Dunelm House. However, Paul Rodgers stated whilst performing with Queen that he wrote the lyric of "All Right Now". This remark can be heard on the Queen + Paul Rodgers CD, Return of the Champions, when "All Right Now" starts.

Norman Greenbaum: "Spirit In the Sky" (1969)

"Spirit in the Sky" is a song written and originally recorded by Norman Greenbaum and released in 1969. The single sold two million copies in 1969 and 1970 and reached number three in the U.S. Billboard chart, as well as number one on the UK, Australian and Canadian charts in 1970. Rolling Stone ranked "Spirit in the Sky" #333 on their list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. The song was featured on the 1969 album of the same name. Cover versions by Doctor and the Medics and Gareth Gates have also made the number 1 spot in the UK.

Tom Jones: "She's a Lady" (1971)

"She's a Lady" is a song written by Paul Anka and performed by Tom Jones, and released in 1971. It is his highest charting U.S. release, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. It is one of Tom Jones's most famous recordings. The song reached #4 on Billboard's Easy Listening survey and spawned a hit album. The "B" side of this single was "My Way", which was also penned by Paul Anka

Lead guitar on the track was played by Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page

The song featured on the soundtrack to the 1995 film To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar and was re-released in Europe in 1995. The single included remixes by US DJ Junior Vasquez.

Pink Martini: "Una Notte a Napoli" (2004)

"Una Notte a Napoli" from "Hang On Little Tomato", the second full-length album from the band Pink Martini. Seven years after their debut album, it was released on October 19, 2004 by Pink Martini's own record label, Heinz Records. It has sold over 550,000 copies, reached #1 on Amazon.com, and gone Gold in France, Canada, Greece, and Turkey.

Eros Ramazotti: "Una Storia Importante" (1985)

Eros Luciano Walter Ramazzotti (born October 28, 1963), known simply as Eros Ramazzotti, is an Italian singer and songwriter. Ramazzotti is enormously popular in Italy, and is well known in most non-English-speaking European countries and in the Spanish-speaking world, as he has released most of his albums in both Italian and Spanish.

Since 1984, he has released 11 studio albums, one EP, three compilation albums, three live albums, and 37 singles, all of which have charted noticeably high in many European countries as well as in South and Central America. Ramazzotti has sold over 50 million records in his 25-year career. His repertory includes duets with numerous well-known artists such as Cher, Tina Turner, Andrea Bocelli, Patsy Kensit, Anastacia, Joe Cocker, Luciano Pavarotti, Laura Pausini, and Ricky Martin.

Ramazzotti first gained international success in 1993, with the release of Tutte storie, which amassed six million album sales and occupied the top five in every country where he had previously released albums. This success led to a BMG International record contract in 1994. His audience appeal comes from several factors, including his unique voice, which can be described as somewhat nasal but nevertheless forceful and resonant, and his energetic delivery of catchy, melodic tunes which are often passionate mid-tempo autobiographical ballads, with instrumentation that is rich in soft-rock influence. Most of albums have been recorded in both Italian and Spanish.

Tina Turner: "Missing You" (1984)

"Missing You" is the title of a song co-written and recorded by British musician John Waite. It was released in June 1984 as the lead single from the album No Brakes. It peaked at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 during the week of September 22, 1984, and number nine on the UK Singles Chart.

John Waite re-recorded the song with country/bluegrass artist Alison Krauss which appeared on her album A Hundred Miles or More: A Collection, and released it to country music radio in 2007. The re-recording peaked at #34 on the Hot Country Songs chart. The original recording has been featured in 1997's Selena, the popular 1980s inspired video game Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and the second episode of the TV series Miami Vice ("Heart of Darkness" - originally aired September 28, 1984). In 2010, it was used in a series of commercial spots for Conan O'Brien's Conan on TBS.

Coldplay: "Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall" (2011)

"Every Teardrop Is a Waterfall" is a song by British alternative rock band Coldplay. It was released on 3 June 2011, as a digital download except in the United Kingdom where it was released on 5 June 2011. The song contains elements of the 1976 song "I Go to Rio" written by Peter Allen and Adrienne Anderson. The song made its radio debut on BBC Radio 1, BBC Radio 2, BBC 6 Music, Absolute Radio, and Xfm. They first performed the song live at the 2011 Rock am Ring and Rock im Park festival in Nürnberg, Germany. It was the last song to be played on Video Hits before signing off forever after 24 years of its broadcast.

The song debuted at number 29 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, selling 85,000 copies in its first week, and has since climbed to peak at number 14.

Spandau Ballet: "Gold" (1983)

Spandau Ballet are a British band formed in London in the late 1970s. Initially inspired by the New Romantic fashion, their music has featured a mixture of funk, jazz, soul and synthpop. They were one of the most successful bands of the 1980s, achieving ten Top Ten singles and four Top Ten albums in the UK between 1980 and 1990. The band split acrimoniously in 1990 but announced their reunion in March 2009, complete with a tour that began in October 2009.

"Gold" is a 1983 single by the British new wave band Spandau Ballet from their flagship third album True. The song is Spandau Ballet's 2nd best-charting single behind their previous release "True," reaching #2 on the UK Singles Chart (being held off the top by KC and the Sunshine Band's "Give It Up"), and #29 on the U.S Billboard Hot 100 chart. A music video was created for the single, which contains the longest-held note by any male artist in any song released during the 1980s.

Gold was re-recorded in a semi-acoustic, unplugged-like style for Spandau Ballet's 2009 album 'Once More'.

Tears For Fears - "Everybody Wants To Rule The World" (1985)

"Everybody Wants to Rule the World" is a song by the British New Wave band Tears for Fears.

It was the band's ninth single release in the United Kingdom (the third from their second LP: Songs from the Big Chair) and seventh UK Top 40 chart hit, peaking at number two in April 1985. In the U.S., it was the lead single from the album and gave the band their first Billboard Hot 100 number-one hit on 8 June 1985, remaining there for two weeks. It also reached number-one on both the Hot Dance Music/Club Play and Hot Dance Singles Sales charts in the U.S. The song has since become the pinnacle of Tears for Fears' chart success, its endurance allowing it to accumulate over two million radio broadcasts by 1994, according to BMI.

In 1986, the song won "Best Single" at the Brit Awards. Orzabal would also argue the song deserved to win the Ivor Novello International Hit of the Year award, claiming that the winner - "19" by Paul Hardcastle - wasn't actually a song; it was just a "garbage dialogue collage."

Curtis Mayfield: "People Get Ready" (Later With Jools Holland)

"People Get Ready" was a 1965 single by The Impressions, and the title track from the album of the same name. The single is today the group's best-known hit, reaching number-three on the Billboard R&B Chart and number 14 on the Billboard Pop Chart. The gospel-influenced track was a Curtis Mayfield composition, and displayed the growing sense of social and political awareness in his writing.

Rolling Stone magazine named "People Get Ready" the 24th greatest song of all time. The song was included in The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll. "People Get Ready" has also been chosen as one of the Top 10 Best Songs Of All Time by a panel of 20 top industry songwriters and producers, including Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, Hal David, and others as reported to Britain's Mojo music magazine, and was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998 .

Mayfield said, "That was taken from my church or from the upbringing of messages from the church. Like there's no hiding place and get on board, and images of that sort. I must have been in a very deep mood of that type of religious inspiration when I wrote that song." The song is the first Impressions hit to feature Mayfield's guitar in the break.

George Harrison: "My Sweet Lord" (1976)

"My Sweet Lord" is a song by former Beatles lead guitarist George Harrison from his UK number one hit triple album All Things Must Pass. The song is primarily about the Hindu god Krishna. It is ranked #460 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of "the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

The song was originally intended for Billy Preston, who had a minor hit with it in early 1970, in his album Encouraging Words. It was written in December 1969, when Harrison and Billy Preston were in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The recording of the song took place in London. Preston was the principal musician while Harrison was engineering the sessions.

Three Dog Knight: "Joy To The World" (1971)

Three Dog Night is an American rock band best known for their music from 1968 to 1975. During that time the band charted 21 Billboard top 40 hits in America, three of which reached Number One. As of 2011, they are still recording and making live appearances.

"Joy to the World" is a song written by Hoyt Axton, and made famous by the band Three Dog Night. The song is also popularly known by its opening words, "Jeremiah was a bullfrog". Three Dog Night originally released the song on their fourth studio album, Naturally in November 1970 (see 1970 in music) and subsequently released an edited-version of the song as a single in February 1971 (see 1971 in music).

The song, which has been descibed by members of Three Dog Night as a "kid's song" and a "silly song", topped the main singles charts in North America, was certified gold by the RIAA, and has since been covered by multiple artists.

Michael Jackson and Paul Mccartney: "The Girl Is Mine" (1983)

"The Girl Is Mine" is a song by Michael Jackson featuring Paul McCartney. It is the first single from Jackson's sixth solo album, Thriller. McCartney is the only featured guest on the album. The track was written and composed by Jackson, and produced by Quincy Jones (with co-production by Jackson). The song was recorded at Westlake Studios, Los Angeles, from April 14 to 16, 1982. The year before, Jackson and McCartney had recorded "Say Say Say" and "The Man" for the latter's fifth solo album, Pipes of Peace (1983). Paul had already recorded Say Say Say in 1981 and had intended to include it on his multi million selling Tug Of War album. However, he eventually decided to allow Michael to write some lyrics for it and therefore give Michael a songwriting credit.

"The Girl Is Mine" achieved success in the music charts. Aside from topping the R&B singles chart, the single peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 and number eight in the UK. By 1985, it had sold 1.3 million copies, and was eventually certified platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America, for shipments of at least one million units.

"The Girl Is Mine" has been the subject of two plagiarism lawsuits. Both instances required Jackson to testify in court, and each lawsuit found in the favour of the singer and his record label. In 2008, for the 25th anniversary edition of Thriller, The Black Eyed Peas singer will.i.am remixed "The Girl Is Mine". The remix received generally unfavourable reviews from music critics.

Shania Twain: "You're still the one" (1997)

"You're Still the One" is a song by Canadian singer Shania Twain. It was the third country single from Shania Twain's 1997 album, Come on Over, while it was the first to be released to pop and international markets. Released in 1998, the single peaked at number two becoming Twain's first top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Although it never topped the chart, the song is recognized as Twain's most successful crossover single, and is one of her most successful singles at country radio. The song was written by Twain and Mutt Lange and produced by Lange.

"You're Still the One" was nominated for four Grammy Awards in 1999, winning two. It won Best Country Song and Best Female Country Vocal Performance and lost Record of the Year and Song of the Year to Celine Dion's "My Heart Will Go On".

The song listed at number 66 on the Billboard: All-Time Hot 100 Top Songs. It was #46 on VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90s. (Source: Wikipedia)

Jon Secada: "Just Another Day" (1992)

Jon Secada (born Juan Francisco Secada Martínez on October 4, 1962) is a Cuban-American singer and songwriter. Secada was born in Havana, Cuba, and raised in Hialeah, Florida. He has won two Grammy Awards and sold 20 million albums since his English-language debut album in 1992. His music fuses funk, soul, pop and Latin percussion. Secada also has worked as a songwriter for Gloria Estefan, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Mandy Moore and other performers.

Derek And The Dominos: "Layla" (1984)

Derek and the Dominos were a blues-rock band formed in the spring of 1970 by guitarist and singer Eric Clapton with keyboardist Bobby Whitlock, bassist Carl Radle and drummer Jim Gordon, who had all played with Clapton in Delaney, Bonnie & Friends.

The band released only one studio album, Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs, which featured prominent contributions from guest guitarist Duane Allman from the Allman Brothers Band. The album went on to receive critical acclaim, but initially faltered in sales and in radio airplay.

Although released in 1970 it was not until March 1972 that the album's single "Layla" (a tale of unrequited love inspired by Clapton's relationship with his friend George Harrison's wife, Pattie Boyd Harrison) would make the top ten in both the United States and the United Kingdom.

The album, which has received praise from both critics and fans alike, is often considered to be the defining achievement of Clapton's career.

Dan Fogelberg: "Same Old Lang Syne" (1981)

"Same Old Lang Syne" is a song sung by Dan Fogelberg from his 1981 album The "Innocent Age".

The song is a narrative ballad told in the first person and tells the story of two long-ago lovers meeting by chance in a supermarket on Christmas Eve.

The melody phrase at the beginning of each verse is taken by Fogelberg from Tchaikovsky's 1812 Overture.

During its debut, the song peaked at #9 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart and is now frequently played during the holiday season and is integrated with traditional Christmas songs, despite having little to do with the holiday other than a brief mention of Christmas Eve.

Twisted Sister: "We're Not Gona Take It" (1984)

"We're Not Gonna Take It" is a 1984 hit song by the American glam metal/heavy metal band Twisted Sister from their album Stay Hungry. The song was first released as a single (with "You Can't Stop Rock & Roll" as the B-side) on April 27, 1984. The Stay Hungry album was released two weeks later, on May 10, 1984. The single reached #21 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, making it Twisted Sister's only Top 40 single. The song was ranked #47 on 100 Greatest 80's Songs and #21 on VH1's 100 Greatest One Hit Wonders of the 80s (coincidentally, it also charted at #21 on the Billboard Hot 100) .

The song was supposedly written by vocalist Dee Snider. As influences for the song, he cites the glam rock band Slade, the punk band Sex Pistols, and the Christmas carol, "O Come, All Ye Faithful".

The song is notable for its popular music video directed by Marty Callner, with its emphasis on slapstick comedy, where a parent gets the worst of the band's mischief. Controversy arose when the depiction of the family in the video caused a public outcry long before the "explicit lyrics" warning was placed on records, cassettes, and CDs. This led to the formation of the Parents Music Resource Center. Mark Metcalf, the actor portraying the father in the video, had previously played Neidermayer, the ROTC student commander in National Lampoon's Animal House (1978). In a reference to his role in the film, Metcalf says "A Twisted Sister pin? On your uniform?!" in the video. Snider himself can also be heard cursing and swearing the question "A pledge pin? On your uniform?" at the end of the song. The actor portraying the teenager is Jeremy Sisto of the HBO series Six Feet Under, Clueless, Suicide Kings, and the T.V. series Law & Order.

In 1999, the US rock band Lit parodied the opening scene in their video for "Zip Lock".

Scorpions: "Send Me An Angel " (1990)

"Send Me an Angel" is a power ballad by German hard rock group Scorpions, released on their 1990 album Crazy World. Along with "Wind of Change", it became the album's signature track, reaching number 44 on Billboard Hot 100 Chart, number 8 on the Mainstream Rock Chart and high chart positions in many European countries. In Poland, it peaked at #3.

According to wikipedia, an orchestral version of the song was recorded for the 2000s orchestral album Moment of Glory that features vocals split with Italian famous singer Zucchero. An acoustic version of the song was also recorded for the 2001's acoustic album Acoustica. The song is not to be confused with the 1980s dance hit by Real Life.
