Brotherhood Of Man: "Save Your Kisses For Me" (1976)

"Save Your Kisses for Me" was the winning song of the Eurovision Song Contest 1976, performed for the United Kingdom by Brotherhood of Man in The Hague, Netherlands. The lyrics and music were written by Tony Hiller, Lee Sheriden, and Martin Lee, the latter two being members of the band. This was the third consecutive occasion on which a group had won the contest.

"Save Your Kisses for Me" was originally written by member Lee Sheriden in August 1974. On bringing the song in to the next songwriting session, others thought that the title was clumsy and reworked it into "Oceans of Love". Sheriden was unhappy with the changes and the song was shelved. A year later when it came to coming up with songs for the next album, they discovered that they needed one more song and Sheriden again put forth "Save Your Kisses for Me". This time it was accepted, as he later recalled:

"I'd had a year to think about it, I knew exactly what I wanted to do on the arrangement, the glockenspiel on the beginning and the big 12-string acoustic guitar and the strings, and then came the day to record the song...It was about midnight and I sang it and it went well. I could see everyone behind the glass panel getting excited and I thought great, they all really like the song, and as I finished I was waiting for them to press the button so they could speak to me and say 'great, we've got a hit' or whatever, and the person pressing it said: 'Lee, we think Martin should sing this song'. But I didn't mind because Martin came in and sung it to perfection."

Soon after, manager Tony Hiller was keen for the group to try for Eurovision, now that the qualifying rounds had changed in the UK. Up till now, a singer was nominated to perform, but for 1976 it was opened up to different singers to enter their own songs. Brotherhood of Man put forward "Save Your Kisses for Me" and it was accepted as one of the 12 finalists. It won A Song for Europe on 25 February 1976, beating second-placed Co-Co by just two points. The song was released as a single and reached number one in the UK Charts two weeks before the Eurovision final, due to be held on 3 April.

Lucenzo feat Big Ali: "Vem dançar kuduro" (2010)

"Vem dançar kuduro" is a multilingual Portuguese/English dance hit single by Lucenzo, a France-based artist of Portuguese origin featuring also France-based American artist Big Ali. Lucenzo sings in Portuguese and Big Ali in English.

"Vem dançar kuduro" (meaning Let's dance Kuduro in English), with kuduro being an Angolan type of music, had a big success in France, with the single "Vem dançar kuduro" reaching #2 in the French Top 50 charts (based solely on actual sales of singles) and #1 on the French Club 40 charts (based on actual plays in 80 discos in France).

"Vem Dançar Kuduro" was also a hit in Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland. Many popular remix versions of the song have been made.

Following the success of the song, Don Omar released with Lucenzo a Spanish-language single "Danza kuduro" that samples on a large part on "Vem Dançar Kuduro", but is a distinct song. At times, both versions have appeared separately on the same chart in certain European countries.

Cold War" is a 2010 song by American singer Janelle Monáe. It is the second official single from The ArchAndroid (Suites II and III) and her second to receive Pitchfork's coveted "Best New Music" tag. The single premiered on February 12, 2010 on Monáe's official website one day after "Tightrope" premiered on Pitchfork Media website. Monae performed Cold War at the 53rd Annual Grammy Awards to a standing ovation from the crowd.

OneRepublic is an American rock band from Colorado Springs, Colorado. Formed in 2002 by Ryan Tedder and Zach Filkins, the band achieved massive success on MySpace, becoming the most prominent unsigned act on the website then. They signed onto Mosley Music Group in 2006, and released their debut album, Dreaming Out Loud in 2007.

Paul Simon: "50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" (1975)

"50 Ways to Leave Your Lover" is a 1975 hit song by Paul Simon, from his album Still Crazy After All These Years. Backing vocals on the single were performed by Patti Austin, Valerie Simpson and Phoebe Snow.

Written after Simon's divorce from first wife Peggy Harper, the song is a mistress's humorous advice to a husband on ways to end a relationship: Just slip out the back, Jack/Make a new plan, Stan. Robert Palmer: "Every Kinda People" (Live 1978)

"Every Kinda People" is a 1978 song originally performed by Robert Palmer in his Double Fun album. It was Palmer's first hit song in the U.S., reaching the Top 20. The song was written by Andy Fraser.

With its blend of Caribbean steel pan, violins and moving lyrics, "Every Kinda People" has become one of Palmer's best-loved songs, covered multiple times by other artists (including Chaka Demus and Pliers, Randy Crawford and Amy Grant) and cited by music fans and spiritual groups for its positive message of peace and multiculturalism.

Tom Petty: "You Got Lucky" (1982)

"You Got Lucky" is the first single from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers' album "Long After Dark". The song peaked at #20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and #1 on the Billboard Top Tracks chart, where it stayed for three weeks at the end of 1982.

The official video for the single features Tom Petty and Mike Campbell arriving in a hovercar from the television series Logan's Run at a black tent in the desert. They find a radio/cassette player and turn it on, thus beginning the music, as the other band members arrive in a motorcycle and sidecar. Entering the tent, they turn on electricity for studio equipment and a bank of television sets. Mike plays a guitar solo, Howie Epstein hits a jackpot on a slot machine, and Tom overturns a video game before they all ride away. The look of this short film echoes the postapocalyptic film Mad Max 2, released in 1981.

Glenn Modeiros: "Nothing's Gonna Change My Love for You" (1987)

"Nothing's Gonna Change My Love For You" is a popular song by Gerry Goffin and Michael Masser. It was originally recorded by George Benson for his 1984 album 20/20.

The song achieved worldwide success in a cover version by Hawaiian singer Glenn Medeiros in 1987 and 1988.

Medeiros originally released this on a small independent label at the age of 16, after winning a local radio talent contest in Hawaii. A visiting radio executive from KZZP in Phoenix, Arizona heard the song and took the record back to Phoenix, where, through word of mouth, it became a national hit. A massive worldwide hit, it reached Number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and spent four weeks at number one on the UK singles chart in July 1988.

The music video features Medeiros with a girl in a pink dress strolling around a beach.

Tanita Tikaram: the name is as memorable as her music — distinctive, idiosyncratic, exotic. And it’s that same haunting originality that comes to life on Lovers In The City, the singer and songwriter’s latest release on Reprise Records.

As an eighteen-year-old, fresh out of school, Tanita Tikaram swept into international prominence during the New Waif era of the late Eighties, and has since pulled out far ahead of the pack with a sound and style completely her own. While her emergence might seem like the quintessential bolt from the blue, in point of fact, Tanita’s remarkable musical history stretches back considerably further.

Tanita Tikaram was born in Munster, Germany where her father, an Indian-Fijian British Army officer, was stationed with his Malaysian wife. It was Tanita’s mother who gave her daughter that euphonious first name, for no other reason than its melodious sound.

Melody, along with harmony, lyrics and rhythm, were a central part of the Tikaram household from Tanita’s childhood on. “My brother would do Elvis impersonations,” she recalls, “and I would back him up on the harmonies. I loved The Beatles as well as soul and country music, with all those wonderful tragic tunes and straight-from-the-heart lyrics. George Michael: "Freedom! '90" (1990)

"Freedom! '90" (also known simply as "Freedom") is a song written and performed by George Michael, and released on Epic Records in 1990. The "'90" added to the end of the title is to prevent confusion with an international hit by Michael's former band, Wham!, also titled "Freedom".

The song was a highly-praised confessional project from Michael, acknowledging his fortune and luck from his early days with Wham! - referring directly to Andrew Ridgeley as his "buddy". The cleverly worded song was initially promoted as describing Michael's effort to break free from his publishing contract with Sony Music. However, as Michael's sexuality came to light eight years later with his arrest in a public bathroom in April 1998, the song became equally recognized as a one that describes the struggles of being a closeted homosexual. Michael has since been open about his orientation.

According to wikipedxia, as if to reinforce the song's sentiment, Michael refused to appear in the music video - which was directed by David Fincher and shot by Jeff Cronenweth - and instead recruited a number of supermodels (including Naomi Campbell, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Tatjana Patitz, Cindy Crawford, and male models John Pearson, Mario Sorrenti, and Peter Formby) to mouth the words. It also featured the destruction of the three items from "Faith" that had come to symbolize Michael's career at that point: his leather jacket (burned), jukebox (exploded) and guitar (exploded).

Don't Look Back in Anger" is a song by English rock band Oasis, released in 1996 as the fourth single from their hit second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory?.

The song was written by the band's guitarist and main songwriter, Noel Gallagher. The song became the band's second single to reach #1 in the UK Singles Chart, where it also went platinum.

"Don't Look Back in Anger" was also the first Oasis single to feature Noel, who had provided backing vocals on debut album, Definitely Maybe, on lead vocals instead of his brother, Liam Gallagher.

Bill Withers: "Ain't No Sunshine" (1971)

"Ain't No Sunshine" is a song by Bill Withers from his 1971 album Just As I Am, produced by Booker T. Jones. The record featured musicians Donald "Duck" Dunn on bass and Al Jackson, Jr. on drums. The song was released as a single in September 1971, becoming a breakthrough hit for Withers, reaching number six on the U.S. R&B chart and number three on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Withers was inspired to write this song after watching the 1962 movie Days of Wine and Roses. He explained, in reference to actors Lee Remick and Jack Lemmon, "They were both alcoholics who were alternately weak and strong. It's like going back for seconds on rat poison. Sometimes you miss things that weren't particularly good for you. It's just something that crossed my mind from watching that movie, and probably something else that happened in my life that I'm not aware of."

According to wikipedia, Withers had intended to write more lyrics instead of repeating the phrase "I know" over and over again, but then followed the advice of the other musicians to leave it that way: "I was this factory worker puttering around," Withers said. "So when they said to leave it like that, I left it." (Withers, then thirty-one years old, was working at a factory making toilet seats for 747s at the time.)

The song was originally released as the B-side to another song called "Harlem". Disc jockeys played "Ain't No Sunshine" as the single instead, and it became a huge hit., the first hit for Withers.

Jevetta Steele: "Calling You" (1987)

Bagdad Café (also known as Out of Rosenheim) is a 1987 German film directed by Percy Adlon. According to wikipedia, the film runs 95 minutes in the U.S. and 108 minutes in the German version.

The film is a comedy set in a remote truck-stop café and motel in the Mojave Desert. The film begins when German tourist Jasmin (Sägebrecht) has a fight with her husband whilst they are driving across the desert. She storms out of the car and happens upon the truck stop run by the tough-as-nails and short tempered Brenda (Pounder), whose own husband, after an argument out front, is soon to leave her too.

The cafe is visited by an assortment of colorful characters, including strange ex-Hollywood set-painter (Palance), glamorous tattoo artist (Kaufmann), topped off with a melodious backdrop in the form of J. S. Bach preludes recited on piano by Brenda's son (Darron Flagg). With an ability to quietly empathize with everyone she meets at the cafe, helped by a passion for cleaning and performing magic tricks, Jasmin gradually transforms the café and all the people in it.

Jevetta Steele is originally from Gary, Indiana, though she has lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota, for many years. She originally migrated to the Twin Cities to become a criminal lawyer, although music and stage would eventually became her destined paths. In addition to her successful solo career, Steele is a member of the acclaimed gospel group The Steeles.
