F. R. David: "Words" (1982)

"Words" is a 1982 romantic song by F. R. David, which sold 8 million copies worldwide and peaked at #2 on the British charts in spring of 1983. It was a huge European hit, peaking at #1 in Germany, Switzerland, Sweden, Austria and Norway. It also went to #1 in South Africa in late 1982 and spent 25 weeks on the charts. The photography of the 7" vinyl was made by Vassili Ulrich.

The track was heard on an episode of British television series Heartbeat, set in the 1960's and usually containing music only from that era.

In the 2000s, he released a French language duo version of the song with the singer Winda entitled "Words, j'aime ces mots". F.R. David and Winda included also an English version as a duo.

Carrie Underwood: "Inside Your Heaven" (2007)

"Inside Your Heaven" is a song written by Andreas Carlsson, Pelle Nylén, Savan Kotecha and produced by Desmond Child. Two versions of the song were released as singles in 2005 (see 2005 in music): one by American Idol winner Carrie Underwood, and another by Idol runner-up Bo Bice.

Underwood's recording of the song, released on June 14, 2005 in the U.S., debuted at number one on the Canadian Singles Chart and on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for seven and one week, consecutively, atop the charts. It was the longest running single of 2005 in Canada. It was certified gold by the RIAA and two times platinum by the CRIA, and it was later included on her debut album, Some Hearts. The B-side is a cover of the Martina McBride song "Independence Day". The song entered the UK Singles Chart at number forty-nine and moved up to forty-six the following week.

Bice's version of "Inside Your Heaven" was released on June 21, 2005 and peaked at number two on the Hot 100. It became the first American Idol single in the history of Billboard to replace the winner's song at number one on the Hot 100 Single Sales chart. It was certified gold by the RIAA. The B-side is a cover of the song "Vehicle" by Ides of March.

The song won the Billboard Music Awards for "Top-Selling Country Single of the Year" and "Top-Selling Hot 100 Song of the Year" (Bice's version was also nominated in this category). It also helped Underwood win the award for "Country Single Sales Artist of the Year". Carrie Underwood's version sold 851,000 copies, while Bo Bice's version sold 401,000.

Rob Thomas feat. Santana: "Smooth" (1999)

"Smooth" is a collaboration between Santana and Rob Thomas of the rock group Matchbox Twenty. The song was written by Rob Thomas and Itaal Shur and sung by Thomas. Originally conceived by Shur as a song called "Room 17", the lyrics were stripped off and the track was given to Thomas. Thomas re-wrote the lyrics and melody and re-titled it "Smooth". Thomas acknowledged that his choice of lyrics was "mostly ironic". Thomas' original thought was to have George Michael sing the song. Thomas recorded the song as a demo to play for Santana. After hearing the song being sung by Thomas, Santana decided to have Thomas record the final version. Matt Serletic produced the record and it was released from Carlos Santana's album Supernatural and became a massive hit in 1999, entering the Top 40 of the Billboard Hot 100 on August 10, 1999, and spending twelve weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 beginning October 12, 1999. It was the first chart-topping song in Santana's long-running career (his previous biggest hit being "Black Magic Woman", number four in 1971). According to some charting standards,"Smooth" is Billboard's most popular song of all time. Though some songs have spent longer than 12 weeks at number one, when combining total sales during the entire time the song has charted, "Smooth" ranks higher than any other. The song was the last number one hit of the 1990s; and, thus, the 20th century.

The song won three Grammy Awards, including Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals. It spent a record-breaking ten consecutive weeks at the top of the VSpot Top 20 Countdown, a record that held up until the Dixie Chicks broke it in 2006. According to Billboard's Hottest Hot 100 Hits by Fred Bronson, this is the number-one song of The Nineties (2003). A cover version of the song is included in the Wii version of Samba de Amigo. Escape the Fate also recorded a cover version of the song for the compilation album Punk Goes Pop 2, released on March 10, 2009.

Rob Thomas wrote this song for his wife, Marisol Thomas. The pair married in 1999, after meeting backstage in 1998. Of Puerto Rican origin, she was the inspiration behind lines such as, "My muñequita, my Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa"[citation needed] Thomas stated in interviews that the phrase "Spanish Harlem Mona Lisa" was inspired by the 1972 Elton John song "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters", which includes references to the 1961 Ben E. King song "Spanish Harlem".

On Billboard magazine's rankings of the top songs of the first fifty years of the Hot 100 singles chart, "Smooth" was ranked as the number-two song overall (behind only "The Twist) and the number-one rock song in the history of the chart.

The Grass Roots: "Midnight Confessions " (

"Midnight Confessions" is a song written by Lou T. Josie and originally performed by the Evergreen Blues Band. It was later made famous by American rock band The Grass Roots, who released the song as a single in 1968 (see 1968 in music). The Grass Roots version became the band's biggest charting hit on the Billboard Hot 100, reaching the Top 5 of the chart.

The original recording of "Midnight Confessions" was a demo by the Evergreen Blues Band, whose manager – Lou Josie – wrote the song. The demo contained a horn section and caught the attention of Record producer/engineer Steve Barri, who was looking to produce a song for the Grass Roots that was a "West Coast" version of a Motown-style production. The Grass Roots version was produced/engineered by Steve Barri with the horn section's arrangement by Jimmie Haskell. The performers included bassist-vocalist Rob Grill, guitarists Creed Bratton and Warren Entner, drummer Rick Coonce, and various session musicians.

New Order: "Round & Round" (1989)

"Round & Round" is a song by New Order and the second single from their 1989 album Technique. It was re-recorded for single release with Stephen Hague, who had previously worked with the group on their hit "True Faith". It is one of the group's most dance-centred songs, with few guitar or bass lines. Like the majority of New Order songs, the song's title is not mentioned in its lyrics. The song was selected for single release by Factory Records' Tony Wilson over the wishes of the band, who wanted to issue "Vanishing Point" (also from Technique) instead.

Smashing Pumpkins: "Tonight, Tonight" (1996)

"Tonight, Tonight" is a song by The Smashing Pumpkins written by the band's frontman, Billy Corgan. It was the fourth single and second track from their third album, Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness, and was released in April 1996. "Tonight, Tonight" was critically acclaimed and commercially well-received upon its release. The music video accompanying the song was also successful and won several awards. Tonight, Tonight was the second to last song played as Chicago's rock radio station Q101 went off the air on Friday July 15th, 2011.

A shorter acoustic version of the song, titled "Tonite Reprise", was included as a b-side to the single and on the triple LP version of Mellon Collie. This single also later appeared in an extended form on the box set The Aeroplane Flies High. Additionally, the song appears on the band's greatest hits release, Rotten Apples.

Suzi Quatro &Chris Norman: "Stumblin In" (1979)

"Stumblin' In" is a song written by Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn, performed by Suzi Quatro and Chris Norman from the album If You Knew Suzi.

The single peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1979. The song was Quatro's only U.S. Top 40 and Norman's lone U.S. charting effort outside Smokie.

The song "Stumblin' In" appears in the 2002 film "National Lampoon's Van Wilder". It appears playing in the background of a scene where Taj Majal Badalandabad (Kal Penn) is attempting to have sex but instead sets his back on fire.

"Fix You" is a song by English alternative rock band Coldplay. It was written by all four members of the band for their third album, X&Y. The track is built around an organ, that is accompanied by slow tempo drums, and a vocals. It was released on 5 September 2005 as the second single from X&Y and has reached number four in the United Kingdom Singles Chart. The song reached number 18 in the United States Billboard Hot Modern Rock Tracks. Promo singles were released for the UK and US.

"Fix You" received positive reviews. Critics complimented the song's music. It has been widely sampled, with different covers and sounds. The song, itself, was nominated for multiple awards in the categories of Best Song Musically and Lyrically and Anthem of the Summer. The music video was garnered as a tribute to the 7 July 2005 London bombings.

Unwritten is the debut studio album by English singer-songwriter Natasha Bedingfield. It was released in the UK on 6 September 2004, where it debuted at number one, and in the U.S. on 2 August 2005, where it debuted at number twenty-six. It spawned the singles, "Single", "These Words", "Unwritten", "I Bruise Easily" and "The One That Got Away" (which was only released in North America). Natalie Imbruglia: "Torn" (1997)

Imbruglia's first internationally released single, "Torn" (1997), was a cover of an Ednaswap song. Instantly the single became one of the biggest hits of the 90s, reaching number two in the UK Singles Chart in November 1997 and number one on airplay around the world and was number one on the Billboard Airplay chart for 14 weeks. The single went on to sell over a million copies in the United Kingdom alone.

It was also released as a radio single in the U.S., but not in buyable CD-format. The single quickly hit #1 on the Billboard's Hot 100 Airplay chart, where it stayed for 14 weeks. At the time, singles not released commercially were unable to chart to the overall Hot 100 chart (combined sales and airplay), so "Torn" made no appearance on it for a while. By the time the policy was changed in late 1998 to allow airplay-only songs, "Torn" was already heading down the charts, so its peak on the Hot 100 only ended up being at #42. The single also topped the Top 40 Mainstream/CHR Pop and Adult Top 40 charts.

In October 1997, it broke the all-time airplay record in the UK for being the most played (more than 2000 plays) for six consecutive weeks. It was finally No. 1 for 14 weeks in the UK radio chart, a record that is being tied by only Simply Red's Fairground. It was the No. 1 radio single in the U.S. from March to July 1998. It was knocked down to No. 2 by The Goo Goo Dolls' Iris.

Rick Dees, in his Top 40 Chart show also declared "Torn" as the 'number one radio single of 1990s' in their 2000 Millennium Countdown show, broadcast from KIIS-FM on New Year's Eve.

Darren hayes: "Popular" (2002)

Darren Stanley Hayes (born 8 May 1972) is a UK based Australian singer-songwriter. Hayes was the front man and singer of the pop duo Savage Garden, whose 1997 album Savage Garden peaked at No. 1 in Australia, No. 2 in United Kingdom and No. 3 in United States. It spawned the singles "I Want You", "To the Moon and Back", and Australian and US No. 1 "Truly Madly Deeply". The duo followed the success of their debut album with Affirmation (1999), which provided additional hits such as US No. 1 "I Knew I Loved You", and Australian No. 3 "The Animal Song". Savage Garden sold more than 23 million albums worldwide before parting ways in 2001.

In mid-2010, Hayes announced the completion of recording his 4th solo album which is being mixed by Robert Orton, who is best known for working with Lady Gaga. The album will be released in 2011.

"Us" is the second single from Regina Spektor's UK compilation album Mary Ann Meets the Gravediggers and Other Short Stories, although it was originally released on her 2004 album Soviet Kitsch. Peter Doherty (born 12 March 1979) is an English musician, writer, actor, poet and artist. He is best known musically for being co-frontman of The Libertines, which he reformed with Carl Barât in 2010. His other musical project is indie band Babyshambles. In 2005, Doherty became prominent in tabloids, the news media, and pop culture blogs because of his romantic relationship with model Kate Moss and his frequently-publicised drug addictions.

Journey: " Don't Stop Believin' " (Live - 2000)

"Don't Stop Believin'" is a popular song by the American rock band Journey, originally released as a single from their 1981 album Escape. The song became a top ten hit on the US Billboard Hot 100, the UK Singles Chart and the Australian Singles Chart.

As digital downloads became prominent in the late 2000s it enjoyed a resurgence in popularity. Allmusic has described the song as "an anthem for the young who wanted to feel free and unrestricted", featuring "one of the best opening keyboard riffs in rock."

Pink Floyd: "Young Lust" (1979)

"Young Lust" is a song by Pink Floyd. It appears on The Wall album in 1979. It is approximately 3 minutes, 30 seconds in length. The lead vocals in the song are sung by David Gilmour, except when Roger Waters sings background vocals during the chorus. The song has a distinctive, raw hard rock sound that, along with their earlier piece "The Nile Song" from More, stands out among Pink Floyd's œuvre as one of the band's few pieces in that genre.

It follows "Empty Spaces" on the album, segueing into "Young Lust." However, there is a promo single which contains the full-length version with a clean guitar intro and outro. This is rare among Pink Floyd collectors, and has been bootlegged on the mammoth 17-CD set "A Tree Of Secrets".

The guitar line used at the end of the second verse was later used after the final guitar solo of "Learning to Fly" on the live recordings Delicate Sound of Thunder and P*U*L*S*E.

As with the other songs on The Wall, "Young Lust" tells a portion of the story of "Pink", the album's protagonist. Pink has become a rock star, and is always away from home as a result of his demanding lifestyle. He begins inviting groupies into his room between concerts, having not seen his wife in months.

Christopher Cross: "Ride Like The Wind" (1980)

"Ride Like the Wind" was the debut single by Christopher Cross in 1980, appearing on his Grammy-winning self-titled debut album. It reached number 2 in the U.S. charts. On the album inner sleeve, Christopher Cross dedicated this song to Lowell George, formerly of the band Little Feat, who died in 1979. It features soaring backing vocals by Michael McDonald and a soaring guitar solo by Cross himself.

According to an interview by Guitar 2001 Magazine with guitarist Eric Johnson, he mentioned performing on "Ride Like the Wind", but his parts did not make the final cut of the song. Johnson performed the guitar solo on the song "Minstrel Gigolo".

The song was also covered by Freddie Hubbard on his 1982 album 'Ride Like the Wind', as well as by Taka Boom on her 1983 album 'Boomerang', as well as by British heavy metal band Saxon on their 1988 album Destiny and by American heavy metal band Speed on their 1999 album Powertrip Pigs.

Cross performed the single live at Flemington Racecourse, Victoria, Australia, as part of the pre-race entertainment for the 2007 Melbourne Cup. In 2009 Cross performed the song on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon with the house band The Roots and special guest Michael McDonald doing the background vocals.

"I Can See Clearly Now" is a song written and recorded by Johnny Nash. It was a single from the album of the same name and achieved success in the United States and the United Kingdom when it was released in 1972. It was covered by many artists throughout the years, including a 1993 hit version by Jimmy Cliff.

"You Give Love a Bad Name" is a song written by Jon Bon Jovi, Desmond Child, and Richie Sambora about a nameless woman who has jilted her lover. Although originally written for the band Loverboy, the song was recorded by Bon Jovi.

The track was released as the first single from the hard rock album Slippery When Wet and hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on November 29, 1986, Bon Jovi's first number one hit. The song reentered the charts at #29 after Blake Lewis performed it on American Idol. In 2009 it was named the 20th greatest hard rock song of all time by VH1.

Massive Attack: "Tear Drop" (1998)

"Teardrop" is a song by Massive Attack, which was first released on their 1998 album Mezzanine. It was released as a single on 27 April 1998. The song became another UK hit for the group, peaking at number 10 on the UK Singles Chart. The song features vocals by Elizabeth Fraser of the Cocteau Twins and contains a sample of Les McCann's song "Sometimes I Cry".

In the United States, the song is best known for its use as the theme song of the medical television series House MD. The instrumental portions of the song at the beginning and the end which feature a bass drum beat reminiscent of a heartbeat are used in the opening theme. This same music was used early in the CSI: Miami episode MIA/NYC Nonstop (2004), a crossover episode centering on both CSI: Miami and CSI: New York.

The song's music video featured a plastic fetus in the womb, lip-synching the song. It was directed by Walter Stern. The single peaked at #16 in Australia. It placed number 22 in the Triple J Hottest 100 of All Time in 2009, and number 23 in the Triple J Hottest 100 of 1998, the year of its release.

Robert Del Naja stated in a 2010 interview on The Hour that Elizabeth Fraser wrote the song about Jeff Buckley, of whom she had been a great friend.
