Paul Anka: "Hold Me Till The Morning Comes" (Live from Japan 1983)

Paul Albert Anka, OC (born July 30, 1941) is a Canadian singer, songwriter, and actor.

Anka first became famous as a teen idol in the late 1950s and 1960s with hit songs like "Diana'", "Lonely Boy", and "Put Your Head on My Shoulder". He went on to write such well-known music as the theme for The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson and one of Tom Jones's biggest hits, "She's a Lady", and the English lyrics for Frank Sinatra's signature song, "My Way" (originally French song "Comme d'habitude").

In 1983, he co-wrote with Michael Jackson the song "I Never Heard", which was retitled and released in 2009 under the name "This Is It". An additional song that Jackson co-wrote with Anka from this 1983 session, "Love Never Felt So Good", has since been discovered, and will be released in the near future. The song was also released by Johnny Mathis in 1984.

Anka became a naturalized US citizen in 1990. His final Top-40 hit in the U.S. to date was Hold Me Til The Mornin' Comes that debuted in the summer of 1983, which included backing vocals from then-Chicago frontman Peter Cetera.

Weezer: "Island In The Sun" (2001)

"Island in the Sun" is a song by American alternative rock band Weezer. It is the second single from the band's album, Weezer (The Green Album). "Island in the Sun" was not originally planned to be on the album, yet producer Ric Ocasek fought for the song and it ended up on the final product. It was a successful radio single and perhaps the band's biggest hit ever outside of the United States, reaching the Top 40 in the UK at number 31, the Top 20 in France at number 17, and Triple J Hottest 100 in Australia at number 7. "Island in the Sun" is also the most-licensed track in the Weezer catalog. Pitchfork Media named it the 495th greatest song of the 2000s.

In late 2001, the band reworked the song's solo for their live show. In 2005, Rivers Cuomo would often open the band's encore by playing "Island in the Sun" alone on an acoustic guitar in the back of the venue they were playing. On some nights, he would crowd surf back up the stage.

Taylor Dayne: "Prove Your Love" (1987)

"Prove Your Love" is a song recorded by dance-pop vocalist Taylor Dayne, released as the second single from her debut album in 1988. Like her previous single "Tell It to My Heart", it is a high energy dance track with aggressive vocal delivery.

The song's music video shows Dayne riding in her man's car around New York City.

"Prove Your Love" was Dayne's second U.S. Top 10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the spring of 1988, where it peaked at #7. The song spent eleven weeks in the Top 40. It also appeared on the U.S. Hot Dance Club Play chart, where it became Dayne's first #1 hit on that chart on April 23, 1988. Furthermore, the song was a hit overseas, going to #1 in Switzerland, #4 in Germany and #8 on the UK singles chart.

"Every Time I Close My Eyes" is the title of a song written, produced and performed by Babyface. It was released as the second single from his album The Day. It features Mariah Carey on backing vocals and Kenny G performing a sax solo.

This release met with commercial and critical acclaim, peaking at number six in the Billboard Hot 100 chart in United States and at number 13 in the United Kingdom. At the 40th Grammy Awards this song received a nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance.

The track was written, produced and performed by Babyface and includes American singer Mariah Carey performing backing vocals, one year after Babyface did the same for her on "Melt Away", a track written and produced by both, included on her album Daydream. It also has a participation by Kenny G playing sax. This collaboration with Kenny G was labeled as a "mismatch" on the Entertainment Weekly review of The Moment, the 1996 release by Kenny G, which also includes this song. However, in the same review by J.D. Considine finds this song a great tune that no doubt it will sound great on the radio. On the Allmusic review, this track was awarded with 3 stars out of 5.

At the 40th Grammy Awards this song received a nomination for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance, which it lost to "Candle in the Wind" by Elton John. For the music video of this single, Babyface received a MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Male Video, losing to "Devil's Haircut" by Beck.

Joe Cocker: "Summer in the City" (1993)

"Summer in the City" is the title of a song recorded by The Lovin' Spoonful, written by Mark Sebastian (brother of John Sebastian) and Steve Boone. It came from their album Hums of the Lovin' Spoonful. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 in August 1966. The song featured a series of car horns, during the instrumental bridge, starting with a Volkswagen Beetle horn, and ending up with a jackhammer sound, in order to give the impressions of the sounds of the summer in the city. The song is ranked number 393 on Rolling Stone's list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

INXS: "Elegantly Wasted" (1997)

"Elegantly Wasted" is the first single and title track of the album Elegantly Wasted by INXS, released around the world in Europe, Japan, Australia and South Africa, although no official release in the US. The song is said to have been written after Hutchence and Bono from U2 went out for a "night on the town".

"Elegantly Wasted" is a deft mix of rock infused with dance beats. The band's new sound bridged the gap between the public's taste for postgrunge rock anthems, and the slinky mechanical seduction of electronica.

Elegantly Wasted was the last album released by INXS with Michael Hutchence, who died that same year, on November 22, 1997.

Alice in Chains: "Would?" (Later With Jools Holland - 1993)

Alice in Chains is an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1987 by Jerry Cantrell and original lead vocalist Layne Staley. The initial lineup was rounded out by drummer Sean Kinney, and bassist Mike Starr (who was replaced in 1993 by Mike Inez).

Although widely associated with grunge music, the band's sound incorporates heavy metal and acoustic elements. Since its formation, Alice in Chains has released four studio albums, three EPs, two live albums, four compilations, and two DVDs. The band is known for its distinct vocal style which often included the harmonized vocals of Staley and Cantrell.

Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s, along with other Seattle bands such as Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. The band was one of the most successful music acts of the 1990s, selling over 35 million albums worldwide, and over 14 million in the US alone. In 1992 the band released their album Dirt which was critically acclaimed and has been certified quadruple platinum. The band also achieved two No.1 Billboard 200 albums (Jar of Flies and Alice in Chains), 14 top ten songs on the Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, and eight Grammy Award nominations.

Although never officially disbanding, Alice in Chains was plagued by extended inactivity due to substance abuse, which resulted in in the 2002 death of Layne Staley, and 2011 death of Mike Starr. The band reunited in 2005 with new lead vocalist William DuVall and released Black Gives Way to Blue, their first studio album in 14 years, on September 29, 2009. The album was a success, being certified gold by the RIAA in March 2010. Alice in Chains is currently working on a new album, which is due for release in early 2012.

"Sweet About Me" is a song by Australian singer-songwriter Gabriella Cilmi from her debut album, Lessons to Be Learned (2008). Co-written with and produced by Xenomania, it was released in April 2008 as the album's lead single. The song was used in commercials for Sure and Dove Bodywash in Europe, as well as a commercial for Rexona Roll On in Brazil. It additionally was used in a Hair Cuttery commercial in the U.S. for a short period of time. The song appears on the international soundtrack to the Brazilian telenovela A Favorita and on the soundtrack to the Portuguese telenovela Feitiço de Amor. It was also featured in the "Chapter Ten: Let It Be" episode of the NBC series Lipstick Jungle and in an episode of the VH1 reality television series Rock of Love: Charm School.

There are two versions of the song: the album version and the radio edit. The first verse is cut in half in the radio edit and the song opens up with the lyrics: "Oh, watching me hanging by a string this time" followed by "Oh, easily climax of a perfect lie". In the album version, there is a repetition of the first line followed by the line: "Don't, easily a smile worth a hundred lies"; the radio edit omits these two lines before going into the pre-chorus. The Temptations: "Papa Was A Rolling Stone" (1972)

"Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" is a soul song, written by Motown songwriters Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong as a single for Motown act The Undisputed Truth in 1971. This version of "Papa" was released as a single in early 1972, and peaked at number 63 on the pop charts and number 24 on the R&B charts.

Later in 1972, Whitfield, who also produced the song, took "Papa Was a Rollin' Stone" and remade it as a twelve-minute record for The Temptations, which was a number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and won three Grammy Awards in 1973. While the original Undisputed Truth version of the song has been largely forgotten, The Temptations' version of the song has been an enduring and influential soul classic. It was ranked #168 on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 Greatest Songs of All Time, one of the group's three songs on the list. Sting: "Desert Rose" (1999)

"Desert Rose" is a single by Sting from his album Brand New Day (1999). The song peaked at #3 in Switzerland, #4 Italy, #15 in the UK Singles Chart and #17 in the US Billboard Hot 100.

The song is noted for Sting's duet performance with Algerian raï singer Cheb Mami, creating a distinct world music feel to the song. It also has a popular music video featuring Sting taking a trip through the Mojave Desert in a Jaguar S-Type and then going to a nightclub in Las Vegas, Nevada to perform the song with Cheb Mami. After shooting the video, Sting's manager Miles Copeland III approached a music licensing maven, Lloyd Simon, to work with Jaguar on a collaboration, and the auto company featured the video in their prominent television advertisements during the year 2000.

Also included on the single releases were club remixes by Victor Calderone. One remixed version of the song was used in an alternative edit of the video, which included more sexually explicit footage.

Yusuf / Cat Stevens: "Moonshadow" (1971)

"Moonshadow" is a song from the album Teaser and the Firecat, released by Cat Stevens in 1971. It is also the title of his upcoming musical. In accordance with wikipedia, Stevens, who is now known as Yusuf Islam, considers this his favourite of his old songs. It's one of the songs that convinced him to release a Greatest Hits record of his work as Cat Stevens. He felt its uplifting message could help people.

When Yusuf Islam (formerly Cat Stevens) appeared on The Chris Isaak Hour in 2009, he said of this song: "I was on a holiday in Spain. I was a kid from the West End (of London) - bright lights, et cetera. I never got to see the moon on its own in the dark, there were always streetlamps. So there I was on the edge of the water on a beautiful night with the moon glowing, and suddenly I looked down and saw my shadow. I thought that was so cool, I'd never seen it before."

An animated short featuring the song was part of the Fantastic Animation Festival feature film released in 1977. The animation begins with a still frame of Teaser and his pet Firecat, pictured as they appear on the cover of the album bearing their names. The picture comes to life, and in the course of the animation, they find the fallen Moon, ride on it as it flies, and find a way to replace it in the sky. The beginning and ending story portions were written by Cat Stevens and narrated by Spike Milligan.

Jet are an Australian rock band formed in 2001 in Melbourne, Australia. The group is composed of lead guitarist Cameron Muncey, bassist Mark Wilson, and brothers Nic and Chris Cester on vocals/rhythm guitar and drums respectively.

The group has sold 4 million records worldwide; with their debut album Get Born, released in 2003, accounting for about 3.5 million of that figure. The band's most recent album, Shaka Rock, was released on 19 August 2009.

Accordinbg to wikipedia, the song "Look What You've Done to Me" is from their album "Get Born" which is the 2003 debut album by the band; which, as of November 2006, has sold 3.5 million copies throughout the world. It also included one of the bands most popular songs "Are You Gonna Be My Girl".

Tina Turner: "What's Love Got to Do with It" (2002 Digital Remaster)

"What's Love Got to Do with It" is the second single released from Tina Turner's breakthrough solo debut album, Private Dancer. In the UK and Continental Europe it was the third single, following Turner's cover of The Beatles' "Help!". The song is widely credited for the huge success of the Private Dancer album itself.

According to Wikipedia, "What's Love Got to Do With It" is arguably Tina Turner's most popular and successful single, becoming her first number-one hit in the United States and establishing Tina Turner as a mainstream Pop and Rock artist, while also reaching number one in Australia and number three in the UK.

In 1993, the song's name was used as the title for What's Love Got to Do With It, a biographical film about Turner's life leading up to the actual release of the song. The music video was directed by Mark Robinson. It is ranked #309 on the Rolling Stone magazine's list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time".

It also ranked #38 on Songs of the Century. It was the 17th best-selling single of 1984 in the UK. The song was originally recorded by UK pop group Bucks Fizz, but unreleased until 2000.

George Harrison - The Beatles: "Yesterday" (1965)

"Yesterday" is a song originally recorded by The Beatles for their 1965 album Help!. According to Guinness World Records, "Yesterday" has the most cover versions of any song ever written. The song remains popular today with more than 3,000 recorded cover versions, the first hitting the United Kingdom top 10 three months after the release of Help!. Broadcast Music Incorporated (BMI) asserts that it was performed over seven million times in the 20th century alone. The song was not released as a single in the UK at the time of its release in the United States, and thus never gained number 1 single status in that country. However, "Yesterday" was voted the best song of the 20th century in a 1999 BBC Radio 2 poll of music experts and listeners. In 2000, "Yesterday" was voted the #1 Pop song of all time by MTV and Rolling Stone Magazine. In 1997, the song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

"Yesterday" is a melancholy acoustic guitar ballad about a break-up. It was the first official recording by The Beatles that relied upon a performance by a single member of the band, Paul McCartney. He was accompanied by a string quartet. The final recording was so different from other works by The Beatles that the other three band members vetoed the release of the song as a single in the United Kingdom. (However, it was issued as a single there in 1976.) Although credited to "Lennon/McCartney", the song was written solely by McCartney. In 2002 McCartney asked Yoko Ono if she would allow reversing the credit on the song to read "McCartney/Lennon". Ono refused.

Jimi Hendrix: "All Along The Watchtower" (1968)

"All Along the Watchtower" is a song written and recorded by singer-songwriter Bob Dylan. It initially appeared on his album John Wesley Harding. It has been covered by other artists in different genres, most notably by The Jimi Hendrix Experience. There exists much speculation as to what the song is actually about.

In accordance with wikipedia, commenting on the songs on his album John Wesley Harding, in an interview published in the folk music magazine Sing Out! in October 1968, Dylan told John Cohen and Happy Traum: "I haven't fulfilled the balladeers's job. A balladeer can sit down and sing three songs for an hour and a half... it can all unfold to you. These melodies on John Wesley Harding lack this traditional sense of time. As with the third verse of "The Wicked Messenger", which opens it up, and then the time schedule takes a jump and soon the song becomes wider... The same thing is true of the song "All Along the Watchtower", which opens up in a slightly different way, in a stranger way, for we have the cycle of events working in a rather reverse order."

The unusual structure of the narrative was remarked on by English Literature professor Christopher Ricks, who commented that "All Along the Watchtower" is an example of Dylan's audacity at manipulating chronological time: "at the conclusion of the last verse, it is as if the song bizarrely begins at last, and as if the myth began again."

Critics have described Dylan's version as a masterpiece of understatement. In Andy Gill's words: "In Dylan's version of the song, it's the barrenness of the scenario which grips, the high haunting harmonica and simple forward motion of the riff carrying understated implications of cataclysm; as subsequently recorded by Jimi Hendrix, ... that cataclysm is rendered scarily palpable through the dervish whirls of guitar."[

Crowded House: "Don't Dream, It's Over" (1986)

"Don't Dream It's Over" is a pop/rock song written by New Zealander Neil Finn and performed by Crowded House for their debut album Crowded House. Various artists have released covers of the song; in 2001, Sixpence None the Richer recorded and released a cover of the song. The song is a staple of 1980s pop compilations.

"Don't Dream It's Over" reached #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. The follow-up to this song was "Something So Strong," Crowded House's only other American Top 40 hit.

In May 2001, Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA) celebrated its 75th anniversary by naming the Best Australian Songs of all time, as decided by a 100 person industry panel. "Don't Dream It's Over" was ranked seventh. While this was considered controversial in New Zealand, it has been noted that the band drew members from New Zealand, Australia and the United States and was formed in Melbourne.

"Don't Dream It's Over" was the very last song performed at Crowded House's "Farewell to the World" concert in 1996.
